Yercaud

Yercaud is a hill station in Salem District, in Tamil Nadu, India. Located in the Shevaroys range of hills in the Eastern Ghats at an altitude of 1515 metres (4970 ft) above sea level, it is a popular tourist destination for people wanting to get away from the heat down south.

Reaching Yercaud
A
t the time of this blog, there at least two roads leading to yercaud from the ground level, the recommended road is the one which starts at salem and reaches all the way to the top and should take about 40 mins to 1hr to cover. It has over 20 hair pin bends but the road was ultra smooth and is a pleasure for drivers who enjoy scenic routes. Our drive involved taking the Mysore – Shivasamudra – Male Mahadeshwara hills – Salem – Yercaud Route and the road was bad in select patches, especially in karnataka but turned out to be fantastic in the Tamil Nadu side. The recommended route though (from Bangalore) is National Highway 7 route from Bangalore to Yercaud which also passes through salem . The drive is very scenic!.

est to have a self driven mode of transportation. Auto RIckshaws and state run transport buses are also available. Alternatively hire a Cab but pay premium during peak season.

Popular Tourist Destinations /  Things to Do
1. Yercaud Lake & Surrounding Parks
S
ituated right in the middle of the town, the naturally formed Yercaud lake, also known as the emerald lake offers boating and a pleasant evening in parks built around it for a small fee, the fee covering the visit to the Anna Park and the Lake Front Park. The Anna Park in on the other side of the road. So a visit to the lake will cover three spots, in specific
a. Yercaud Lake
b. Anna Park
c. Deer Park
Unfortunately the deer park was closed on the day of my visit (Tuesday). Also note that the lake view park closes at 5.30 p.m. There is not much ‘to do’ per se apart from just walking around and taking in the sights and sounds. The parks themselves are pretty ordinary. Overall all the three spots can be covered in 2-3 hours unless one intends to deliberately spend extra time.

In addition, there are multiple restaurants present next to the lake , this being the town centre as well. In specific, “Eggetarian” was fantastic and offered great food and at very nominal pricing.

2. Kiliyur Falls
A
beautiful water fall situated approximately 3 kms from the yercaud lake. The surplus water from the yercaud lake creates this waterfall and the water fall itself is about ~300 feet tall. It can be reached easily via a motorable road (Car & Bikes). Staircases and Steps take viewers from the Parking lot to the water fall which 200 feet below and half a kilometer away. It is an easy trek but still not recommended for the elderly due to the steep gradient. Vendors sell snacks and drinks at the parking lot. There is no entry fee to the water fall. (At the time of writing this blogpost). Spend about an hour here.

3. Pagoda Point
view point from atop an hillock which offers a very panoramic and scenic  view of hills. Also known as the pyramid point, Pagoda point is located about 4 kms from the town centre and is a highly recommended visit in the mornings ; if lucky without the mist, the view is breathtaking. There is a small temple and viewpost located here. Spend about an hour here.

lso known as Servarayan Temple, it is situated about 7 Kms from the town centre and on top of a plateau. Enter the compound after paying small fee. The temple is built around a dark cave and seated inside are God Shervarayan and Goddess Kaveri. There is a view point situated next to the temple which offers great view of the nearby hills. Spend about half an hour here.

A
number of multicuisine and south indian restaurants are located right next to yercaud lake. Some of restaurants that we visited were
1. Eggetarian – Recommended (Continental, English)
2. The breeze
3. Malar Restaurant (South Indian)

Yercaud being a hill station and a popular tourist destination caters with hotels and resorts at multiple price ranges. Search for travel discounts and book early to avail a stay a relatively lower cost. The location of our stay , MM resorts offered fantastic stay at a very reasonable price. (3500/- for 3 nights). The hotel provides food as well if pre-ordered. IN addition, a bonfire is organized in the nights for the guests with some peppy music.

Overall
decent getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city, especially in the summer season. But given that there is not much to do as such, a day is all that is needed to visit all the major tourist spots.
